Human rights organisations call on the UN to extend the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on Eritrea
Twenty-four leading human rights organisations (including One Day Seyoum) has submitted a joint letter calling on the UN Human Rights Council to extend the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on Eritrea.
The role of the special rapporteur is to“assess and report on the situation of human rights and the engagement and cooperation of the Government of Eritrea with the Human Rights Council and its mechanisms". However, the Eritrean regime has refused to cooperate and the situation in the country remains dire.
During the 44th session of the Council (scheduled to begin in June 2020), state delegations come together to decide if the Special Rapporteur's mandate gets renewed or not. We are calling for its renewal as we believe that the Special Rapporteur plays a crucial role in applying much needed pressure on a regime that normally operates without very little interference.
