Hanna & Meaza (2018)

In this short documentary film, we meet Hanna and Meaza - two sisters living in Boston. They grew up in Asmara, the capital city of Eritrea, but their lives were abruptly interrupted when their father Petros Solomon was abducted by the government in 2001. Their mother Aster Yohannes was studying in the US at the time and when she tried to return to her family in 2003, she was arrested at the airport. Neither of them have been seen they were taken.

Hanna and Meaza share memories of their childhood, of their parents abduction and of what life looked like after. They speak candidly about their own experiences of enforced labour, unjust imprisonment and migration. They speak about the pain of not knowing about their parents conditions and how they are able to keep going.

Their story is a symbol of what Eritrea has become since the government turned it into a dictatorship in 2001.
